The Candy House is Jennifer Egan's return to the world of A Visit From The Good Squad. A sequel. Like the original, the book is structured as a collection of short stories that together form a rich universe of multiple perspectives and styles. A fun and engaging read, I nevertheless found it less convincing than the original good squad. One reason is that Egan's handling of contemporary and future themes of technology and its influence over people's lives is brave, but somehow not sophisticated enough to be worthwhile. It could also be simply that the novelty and freshness of her approach is hard to repeat. Still, this is fun, current fiction.
